Purpose of the Position
The Director of Finance and Operations (DFO) will provide strategic leadership and oversight of all financial and operational functions across Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and compliance with local regulations. This role plays a critical part in supporting sustainable growth, operational efficiency, and financial integrity across the region, while fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment that empowers teams and drives impact.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop multidisciplinary teams across Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize, setting strategic goals, overseeing day-to-day execution, and ensuring team accountability.
- Oversee all HR-related processes in coordination with HR teams, including recruitment, onboarding, compensation, employee relations, and offboarding, while maintaining confidentiality.
- Provide strategic financial and operational guidance to executive leadership, board members, and project managers, influencing organization-wide decisions.
- Manage budgeting, forecasting, income statements, and balance sheet items, ensuring alignment with donor intent and financial sustainability.
- Supervise local banking operations, cash flow, treasury transfers, exchange rate impacts, and audit coordination.
- Ensure compliance with legal, financial, and labor regulations across the region, including supplier due diligence and documentation.
- Drive risk assessment and process improvements to support the effective implementation of standard operating procedures.
- Coordinate financial planning for land deals and special projects, including quarterly certifications and asset management.
- Oversee public and private funding awards in partnership with program and finance teams.
- Lead ERP system migration locally, supporting data structuring, change management, training, and integration.
- Manage external stakeholder relationships, including vendors and service providers, ensuring transparency and compliance.
- Support country entry/exit processes for operations in the region.
Requirements and competences to work with us
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
- An advanced degree or professional certification (e.g., CPA, MBA) is a strong asset.
Experience
- Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in finance and operations, including 4+ years in leadership roles.
- Proven track record managing cross-functional and multicultural teams across multiple locations.
- Experience working with international NGOs or mission-driven organizations.
- Strong background in budget development, financial reporting, audits, and compliance.
- Experience overseeing ERP system implementation and change management processes.
- Familiarity with managing both privately and publicly funded projects.
- Experience engaging with senior leadership and external stakeholders, including board members and donors.
Knowledge and Skills
- In-depth knowledge of GAAP and financial regulations in Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data and provide strategic insights.
- Proficiency in financial systems, ERP platforms, and MS Office (especially Excel).
- Understanding of HR practices, procurement processes, and legal compliance in Latin America.
- Bilingual fluency in Spanish and English (spoken and written).
- High attention to detail and ability to manage competing priorities under tight deadlines.
- Comfortable navigating complex organizational structures and decentralized teams.

- Location: This role must be based in either Mexico City, Mexico, or Guatemala City, Guatemala. The selected candidate will need to work closely and in person with Country Directors located in these primary offices.

- Work Modality: This role offers flexibility to work across locations in Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize. The ability to lead and collaborate with remote teams across countries is essential.
- Travel: Occasional travel within the region may be required.
